Sarah is in her car. She is on her way to work.
She is driving to work.

Am/is/are+ verb-ing is the present continuous:
am (=I'm)
he/she/it is (=he's etc.)
we/you/they are (=we're etc.)

driving
working
doing etc.

Lihat contoh kalimat dibawah ini:

1. Please don't make so much noise. I'm trying t o work. (not I try).
2. 'Where's Mark?' 'He's having a shower.' (not He has a shower).
3. Let's go out now. lt isn't raining any more. (not lt doesn't rain).
4. (at a party) Hi, jane. Are you enjoying the party? (not Do you enjoy)
5. What's all that noise? What's going on? (=What's happening?}.

Terkadang tindakan tersebut tidak terjadi pada saat berbicara.

Sebagai contoh:

1. Steve is talking to a friend on the phone. He says.
2. I'm reading a really good book at the moment. it's about a man who ...

Keterangan:
Steve tidak membaca buku itu pada saat berbicara.
Maksudnya dia sudah memulainya, tapi belum menyelesaikannya. Dia sedang membacanya.

Some friends of mine are building their own house. They hope to finish it next summer.

Anda dapat menggunakan saat ini terus menerus dengan hari ini saya minggu ini saya tahun ini dan (periode sekitar sekarang}:

A: You're working hard today. (not You work hard today)
s: Yes, I have a lot to do.

The company I work for isn't doing so well this year.
Kita menggunakan Present Continuous Tense ketika berbicara tentang perubahan yang terjadi di sekitar sekarang, terutama dengan kata kerja ini: dapatkan perubahan menjadi naik naik turun tumbuh perbaiki.
Perhatikan contoh kalimat present continuous tense berikut ini

1. Is your English getting better? (not Does your English get better).
2. The population of the world is increasing very fast. (not increases).
3. At first I didn't like my job, but I'm beginning to enjoy it now. (not I begin}.

Pengertian Present Continuous Tense
Present continuous tense atau present progressive tense merupakan bentuk kata kerja yang dipakai untuk menyatakan aksi yang sedang berlangsung sekarang (present) atau rencana di masa depan (future). Karena dapat digunakan pada present / future, tense ini diiringi adverbial of time untuk memperjelas bentuknya.

Rumus Present Continuous Tense
Tense dibentuk dengan auxiliary verb “be”, berupa is/am/are – karena present tense (waktu sekarang), present participle (-ing). "Is" dipakai pada subject berupa singular noun (Muhakus, hat dan third person singular pronoun (seperti: she, he, it); "are" pada plural noun (girls, women, hats), plural pronoun (we, they) dan you; sementara "am" untuk subject I.

Pada umumnya tense ini terjadi pada aksi berupa dynamic / action verb, tidak stative verb. Mengapa demikian?. Karena secara umum dynamic verb yang mempunyai bentuk continuous.

Berikut rumus present continuous tense berupa kalimat positif, negatif, dan interogatif.
Kalimat Positif
Subject + is, am, are + verb + ing

• I am fixing the cart

Kalimat Negatif
Subject + is not, am not, are not + verb + ing

• I am not fixing the cart

Kalimat Interogatif
is, am, are + Subject + verb + ing?

• are you fixing the cart?

Fungsi dan Contoh Kalimat present continuous tense

1. present continuous tense dipakai untuk mengungkapkan kegiatan yang sedang terjadi pada waktu sekarang. Keterangan waktunya: now, at the moment, over theholidays, etc.
Contoh kalimat present continuous tense:

1. You are driving a bus now
2. They are swimming in the pool at the moment
3. We are enjoying our time over the holidays

2. present continuous tense dipakai untuk mengungkapkan sebuah rencana maupun perpindahan ke suatu posisi atau keadaan. Keterangan waktunya: on monday, at 8 o'clock on tuesday, next (week/month/year), this week.
Contoh kalimat present continuous tense:

1. She is not taking the bus on monday
2. He is walking in the park at 8 o'clock on tuesday
3. I am going to my party's friend next week
4. You are moving from the area this week

3. present continuous tense dipakai untuk mengungkapkan sebuah kekesalan atas kegiatan yang terjadi berulang - ulang. Pada umumnya kita menggunakan "always".
Contoh kalimat present continuous tense:

1. Why is the cat always catching the mouse?
2. We are getting sick of them always looking us
3. His father is always yelling at him and complaining about his action.
