Kinds of sentences: Statements, Questions, Commands, Exclamations

When we speaker or write, we use sentences. A sentence is a group of words that has 

meaning. It starts with a capital letter, examples: A, B, C, D, E F or Z and finishes with a full stop (.), question mark (?) or exclamation mark (!).

There are 4 kinds of sentences:

1. Statement

A sentence that gives a fact or opinion. A statement can be positive or negative. A positive statement states facts or opinions that we think are true. 

Example:

  • Muhakus is in the classroom. He is finishing the task.
  • We use negative statements to say what we think is not true.

Example:

  • Muhakus is not in the classroom.

A negative sentence usually has not or n’t in it. It usually has word like:

  • Cannot / can’t
  • Should not / shouldn’t
  • Will not / won’t
  • Must not / mustn’t 
  • Would not / wouldn’t
  • Has not / hasn’t
  • Have not / haven’t
  • Do not / don’t
  • Does not / doesn’t
  • Did not / didn’t
  • Is not / isn’t
  • Are not / aren’t
  • Was not / wasn’t
  • Were not / weren’t

Example:

  • I mustn’t do it again.
  • You cannot do that.

Other Examples:

  • We looked him last week = we didn’t look him last week.
  • I know the answer = I didn’t know the answer.
  • You and I should build a hotel = you and I shouldn’t build the hotel.
  • She gives me some money = She doesn’t give me some money.
  • He can’t take the bus at 07.00 o’clock = He takes the bus at 07.00 o’clock.


2. Question

We ask question when we need some information. A question can be positive or negative. A positive question is used when you really do not know the answer.

Example:

  • What’s his name?
  • Did he like swimming?
  • Can they play football?
  • A negative question is used when:
  • You are surprised

Example:

  • Don’t they like you?
  • Aren’t you Gina’s husband?

Note:

Negative questions have negative verbs. Negative verbs have the word not or n’t in them. These words are usually:

  • Isn’t / aren’t
  • Wasn’t / weren’t
  • Doesn’t / don’t / didn’t
  • Can’t / couldn’t
  • Other examples:
  • Where do you come from?
  • Who are they?
  • When did she get the party?
  • How does she do it?
  • Why did he come back again?
  • Aren’t they your friends?
  • Isn’t she my classmate?
  • Haven’t you got marbles?


3. Command

We use a command to tell a person to do something. A command can be a positive or negative.

A positive command is used:

Tell someone to do something

Example:

  • Stand up please
  • Give someone instructions

Example:

  • Put the teabag in the glass. Pour warm water onto it.
  • A negative command is used when you:
  • Tell someone not to do something

Example:

  • Don’t close the cover.
  • Give instructions not to do something.
  • Example:
  • Do not pull the cart.

Note:

Negative commands used the words:

DO NOT / DON’T / NEVER

Example:

  • Do not use the pencil.
  • Don’t speak so slowly.
  • Never give up man.

Other example:

  • Put it on the table.
  • Clean the whiteboard.
  • Dig the soil.
  • Give it to me.
  • Write this letter.
  • Don’t do that please.
  • Never put the rubbish on the road.
  • Don’t talk so much.


4. Exclamation

We use exclamation to show strong feeling such as anger, surprise or get attention. Exclamations are usually positive but there are few negative exclamations.

Positive:

  • Well done!
  • Good luck!
  • Goal!
  • Negative:
  • It’s not fair!
  • No way!
  • No fear!
  • No pain, no gain!
  • Other examples:
  • What a beautiful we are!
  • How handsome you are!
  • Hey you!
  • What a big they are!
  • What a pity!
